Barter Business
Dad was usually busy working 2 jobs. Running the
used car lot, "junkyard", and he was a laborer at the B&O
railroad. Brakeman, I believe.
So, in his business, sometimes, he would barter a car for
some work he needed done, or vice versa.
We had our share of problems, if not more than other
families. But, one of the problems was the toilet overflowing a lot, or
not working.
Dad would finally come home and either fix the problem,
or get someone else to fix it expediently, as best he could.
But, apparently it was obvious that the problem could
only be solved with a new septic tank.
Well, we always struggled with money, everybody knew
that, but Dad always got the job done, doing whatever it took no matter what.
So, I was wandering around outside and saw a truck with a
flatbed pull up with a big machine on it. I come to find out that it was
a backhoe.
The guy took the machine and dug a deep hole in the back
yard, behind the house, and I mean a big hole.
Then, Dad brought over a junk van over with the cletrack
and pushed it in the big hole.
Dad and the guy placed the sewer pipes through the window
of the van, then covered the whole thing up with dirt.
The toilet worked again!!!
